A feature of the Wairoa River is the opposing currents within the river. These currents become one as they enter the river mouth. This reflects a traditional trait of the Wairoa people to have the ability to put aside their differences when engaged in a common purpose.

It is in this spirit that Te Roopu Whakaata Maori I Te Wairoa invites the people of Aotearoa and the World to our turangawaewae, our place to stand, to celebrate and rejoice in the best in Maori and international indigenous film-making.

This is the website of the WAIROA MAORI & INDIGENOUS FILM FESTIVAL 2008, which is to be held over Matariki Queen's Birthday Weekend May 30th to June 2nd. Confirmed venues for the festival are the Gaiety Cinema and Taihoa Marae.

Festival organisers have released the festival programme, with entries to the festival from New Zealand and around the world. Check them out in our Films Section >.

Wairoa Maori & Indigenous Film Festival 2008 - a celebration of Maori and Indigenous film, will be presented under the theme of "Te Karanga O Papatuanuku, Te Waiata O Te Whenua' ~ 'The Land Sings, The Earth Cries Out."

Queen's Birthday Weekend in Wairoa is a special time, marking the beginning of the district-wide Matariki celebrations.

Matariki is emerging locally and nationally as an important occasion for Maoridom, marking the "Maori New Year" and the rise of the Matariki (Pleiades) constellation.

Join us for the third Wairoa Maori Film Festival this year!

For the event, hundreds of people converged on Wairoa from across the country and around the world, including a delegation sponsored by the National Geographic All Roads Film Project.
