(Becs Arahanga – Director / Producer)
Last year I rewrote one of my husbands old scripts, that was shortlisted by the NZFC and I started Prod Managing TVC’s that our company AWA films made for Te Wiki o the Red Maori, which got my head back in the game. In August last year, I wrote the screenplay for Laundry, which is a comedy about how your love life (sex life) is affected after you have kids. Having 5 kids myself, and now mokopuna, I have had plenty of inspiration and opportunity to research and then write and direct this film. Once written, it immediately had a life of its own and the feedback from people was really excited. We decided to crowd fund for it via the online crowd funding platform Boosted. While that was under way, my mate told me that Nga Aho Whakaari was wanting to support Maori film makers and were going to launch their Nga Aho Whakaari “Short Films Project” at their 20year Hui, with a workshop and a pitching session. Been a massive learning curve, I was definitely the least experienced person on set and in post.. but incredibly lucky that I had masters all around me so I could grow and learn within the whole experience. I have already started developing my next short film, which I’m excited about, with the idea of making a feature in the future.Right now, I’m just following where the flow is taking me, not overthinking it too much, but moving and taking action when I need to.
