It's a big year ahead for the Maori film festival. Based in Wairoa, the Maori film festival now hosts film screenings across NZ, and curates film programmes around the world. Below check out news on events in Wairoa, Auckland, Invercargill, Paris, Honolulu and Tahiti. But first, here’s details of our new radio show on Maori radio Waatea.

KORERO KIRIATA: FILM & ARTS TALK ON RADIO WAATEA

Starting November 2015, a weekly film and arts show has been presented on Radio Waatea 603 AM, KORERO KIRIATA with Leo Koziol (Ngati Kahungunu, Ngati Rakaipaaka). With Ngati Kahungunu and Ngati Rakaipaaka whakapapa, for over a decade Leo Koziol has been the Director of the Wairoa Maori Film Festival. An environmentalist, film curator, producer and artist, Leo takes a weekly look at the Maori film scene, and beyond. Maori in films, the world indigenous film industry and a whole lot more.

“We’ve had a great response to the show, we’ve talked to people in the film world and theatre world, had interviews with film makers and film festivals in Hawaii, Canada, Sydney, Cairns and Sami,” says Leo Koziol. “Our exciting next step is podcasting of our show on our blog. We’re also really excited about our partnership with our friends at NZ Entertainment Podcast, Wal Reid and Jarred Tito who are now regulars on the show. It is hoped to live broadcast from the Wairoa Maori Film Festival in June via Radio Waatea and our podcast / webcast network.”

Korero Kiriata, with Leo Koziol, Friday mornings 10 am on Waatea 603 AM, rebroadcast Sundays 1 pm, and online at www.manawairoa.com.

FILMS AT MUSEE DU QUAI BRANLY, PARIS

This month, we are partnering with the Oceanistes Society in Paris for a very special screening of Maori films at Musee du Quai Branly. Representing the Maori film festival at this event will be Deborah Walker-Morrison (Ngati Rakaipaaka, Ngati Kahungunu), film maker and associate professor at University of Auckland. Deborah Walker-Morrison has specialised knowledge in French film noir and Maori cinema.

The following films will be presented at Musee du Quai Branly, Paris, France on March 31, 2016:”Taniwha” by Mika; “Tohunga” by Rebecca Collins; “Pumanawa” by Poata Eruera; “Ahi Ka” by Richard Curtis; “Uru” by Hiona Henare, followed by korero (in French) with Deborah Walker-Morrison, ambassador to the Wairoa Maori Film Festival.

ASINABKA AT WAIROA

In June, Wairoa Maori Film Festival will be partnering with the Asinabka Film & Media Art Festival in Ottawa, Canada, to present a collection of short films in Wairoa and Auckland. The collection of films will be themed on “Music” or “Nigamowin” and will be screened at the Maori Film Festival in Wairoa and at a special presentation at Auckland Art Gallery.

“In the Anishinaabe language, the word for singing, or song, is Nigamowin. Songs are an integral part of traditional Anishinaabe culture and language, and are often accompanied by the drum, which is said to be the heartbeat of mother earth," says Asinabka curators Howard Adler and Christopher Wong.

“Nigamowin” will be the centrepiece presentation of the Wairoa Maori Film Festival on Saturday June 4. The Wairoa Maori Film Festival runs from June 3 to June 6, at Kahungunu Marae, Nuhaka, and the Gaiety Theatre, Wairoa.

Films curated by Asinabka will also be presented at a special Maori & Indigenous Film Festival at Auckland Art Gallery on June 11.
